I believe in personal austerity, but I also happen to like technology.
Here's a guide on how to lobotomize the internet and reclaim your attention:
-
Use uBlock Origin to
remove recommendations and the frontpage from YouTube
(or any other website that is an attention vortex though occasionally useful).
In this way, it becomes a rather uninteresting website.
-
Use LeechBlock to limit time consuming websites.
-
Use /etc/hosts to block out news sites or other distractions.
-
Delete your social media to whatever extent is possible.
If you rely on them for communication,
use Beeper to eschew social media websites/apps
in favor of just the chat functionality.
-
Get a smart watch (time, reminders, calendar, weather, voice memos, cardio tracking)
and stop using your phone.
-
Get an E-reader and spend all your time on reading.
Make sure you do not go outside.
-
Write a script that sends your E-reader a daily digest of news.
I like Drop Site News' daily digest for geopolitical news.
-
Subscribe to some newspapers or magazines in print,
e.g. Harper's or n+1 or Le Monde diplomatique.
